On January 7th my wife, Traci and our four-year old daughter Olivia were in a nasty car accident on Memorial Parkwayafter a long day at work and school.
The car was hit hard but both appeared to be free of severe injury. As a precaution Olivia went to the emergency room via ambulance. Not long after meeting up with them at the hospital, I escorted Olivia down to the ultrasound room so they could check for an internal damage.
Always the inquisitive one Olivia asked what parts of her body we were looking at on the monitor. We saw her liver, her kidneys, her spleen and her stomach. After looking at all of that Olivia asked if we would be looking at her heart. The ultrasound technician told Olivia that getting a peek at her heart was not in the plan.
Olivia then asserted herself and plainly asked if she could see her heart. The technician wanted to grant the request of a child who had just been through a traumatic experience so she moved the wand on the machine so we could all get a look at Olivia's heart. Once the picture of her heart was in focus Olivia simply stated,
Jesus lives there and I just wanted to look and see him. I don't see him though. Can I have a sticker now?
Proverbs 14:30a says "A heart at peace gives life to the body."
Olivia's heart was at peace because as far as she was concerned Jesus lived in her heart and with that security no danger brought on by a car accident could take away the life in her body. On the way back to her room I thought Olivia might be concerned that she didn't see Jesus in her heart on the ultrasound. So I reminded her that even though she didn't see Jesus in her heart that he certainly was in there. Olivia's reply:
"I know daddy. Jesus is always in my heart. I think he was just sleeping when we took that picture. I want Skittles when we get back to my room."
